Gran Tarajal is a town in the south of the island in the municipality of Tuineje boasting an 800m long beach. There are many sea front bars and restaurants and a port. The town is shielded from the usual trade winds by mountains. Many of the restaurants specialise in locally caught fresh fish. Continuing the fish theme the town hosts a deep sea fishing competition each September also there are giant murals that adorn houses and other buildings along the oceanfront promenade with a sea based theme.
